OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Carding a 69 during his final turn on Olympia Fields Country Club, Texas A&M junior golfer Cameron Champ wrapped up his first collegiate victory Sunday by finishing the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational with a three-round total of five-under par.

As a team, the Aggies (280-295-289=864, +24) posted a third-place finish behind tournament-host Illinois (+5) and Oklahoma State (+18). Meanwhile, North Carolina (+26) and Florida State (+27) rounded out the top five on the 15-team leaderboard which featured some of the top squads in the country.

“I’m so proud of Cam,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said, “That is as good of a win as you’re going to get during the regular season. He was competing against some of the best players in college golf and came away with a three-shot victory. To shoot five-under par on a course that hosts major championships just shows the kind of golf he’s capable of playing and the player he has become.”

Champ (65-71-69=205, -5), a native of Sacramento, Calif., opened his run at the event with a tournament-low and personal-best round of 65 on Friday to surge to the top of the leaderboard. He secured the win during Sunday’s final round with a one-under showing that featured four birdies.

“He was in complete control of his golf ball and his emotions all weekend,” Higgins said of Champ. “He did a great job of handling the pressure that comes with being in contention and I think that’s going to do nothing but help him as the season progresses, especially at the end of the year when we’re playing at the SEC Tournament and NCAA Championship.”

Chandler Phillips (69- 73-73=215, +5), meanwhile, notched the second consecutive top-20 showing to start his sophomore season in Aggieland by earning a share of 17th place. The Huntsville, Texas, native placed second at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate earlier this month.

Freshman Viraj Madappa (72-75-73=220, +10) carded a 33rd-place showing while junior Kavan Eubank (74-76-74=224, +14) and sophomore Max Miller (79-76-76=231, +21) rounded out the Texas A&M lineup in ties for 45th and 66th place, respectively.

“I’m proud of the guys overall,” Higgins added. “We really only had one flaw this weekend and that was our finishing holes in all three rounds. It’s something we’re going to have to fix and do a better job of handling the stress that comes with finishing rounds off.”

The individual win marks the second consecutive event the Aggies have placed a golfer atop the player leaderboard as Eubank picked up the victory at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
