Cell Restrictions and Office Space for COCS

The College Station City Council had one of their shortest regular meetings in recent memory Thursday night, but that came after a busy afternoon workshop session.

Click to hear WTAW’s Chris Clift talk with Council member Dennis Maloney:

Council voted to spend just over $10,000 of red light camera money to fund signs that will restrict cell phone use in school zones.

A state law was recently passed that allowed the restrictions to be enforced, but only if signs were in place.

Maloney says the signs will be put up very soon.

A lack of work space for city staff is something that Council has talked about many times, and Thursday afternoon they voted to get information from architects about the possibility of adding on at the current municipal court building.

Maloney says a potential structure there could house things like Council Chambers and the city manager’s office, then in the future the City would build a new City Hall and the municipal court would have room to expand into that addition.

There won’t be any estimated budget or timeline for the potential project until city staff reports back to Council.

Clarifying the smoking ordinance was also part of the Thursday afternoon workshop.

The Hookah Station on Northgate asked to be exempted from the restriction on smoking in bars and restaurants under the classification for tobacco and cigar shops.

Maloney says because they only generate about 15 percent of their revenue from smoking related activities Council denied that request.
