After spending the weekend sequestered in a local motel, the jury in a Brazos County District Court capital murder trial reached a verdict.
Artis Pollard of Brenham was found guilty of killing Terrell McCoy. The December 2006 shooting took place at a home northwest of Bryan.
Because prosecutors did not seek the death penalty, Pollard was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The jury spent over nine hours in deliberations, including about two and a half hours Monday morning.
August 1st marks one year since the Bryan city council and Texas A&M agreed to build an indoor facility at Midtown Park that will be used by the university’s tennis teams. During Tuesday’s Bryan council workshop meeting (July 9), mayor Bobby Gutierrez was revealed that there is no final design. The reason is that proposals so far have exceeded the $17 million dollar budget. Deputy city manager Hugh Walker tells WTAW News that various options currently under consideration essentially have the same court and floor space. General manager Jamie Cox of Legends Events Center, who will also be managing the new building, told the council that they will still be able to recruit additional events when the building is not being used by A&M. A&M will pay the city a fee as part of a 30 year interlocal agreement. In October 2023, the council hired the same company that was in charge of building the Legends Events Center and the same company that manages Legends for the city to design, build, and manage the second building. College Station police go to a local hospital to investigate a domestic violence incident where a woman was being treated for injuries that included a broken ankle. The CSPD arrest report says the victim was struck six times on the ankle with an M-4 carbine rifle. She also had bruises on her lower legs and her arms. Officers who stopped the suspect’s vehicle found a rifle with dried blood that is believed to what was used to hit the victim. 37 year old Gant Solomon of College Station, who told a nurse another man struck the woman, was arrested for family violence aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carry of a weapon. Solomon remains jailed as of July 11 in lieu of bonds totaling $54,000 dollars. Bryan police respond to a report of a man who was struck by a SUV in the parking lot of an apartment complex. The man refused medical treatment after he was struck in the upper arm. The driver of the SUV, the man’s girlfriend, was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to the BPD arrest report, the man said he was struck while they were arguing. 19 year old Kaitlyn Taylor of Houston remains in jail as of July 11 in lieu of a $12,000 dollar bond.
The Texas department of public safety announces a new and temporary location for Brenham area residents to conduct drivers license business. The Blinn College Brenham campus student center will host a temporary office starting next Monday (July 15). This follows the April 12th crash of a stolen semi into the Brenham DPS building that killed two people. A DPS news release did not provide information on the status of a new permanent office building in Brenham. Earlier this week, the driver of the semi was indicted by a Washington County grand jury on two counts of capital murder and other crimes related to the crash. News release from the Texas Department of Public Safety: The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), in partnership with Blinn College, announces the opening of a temporary driver license (DL) office at the Blinn College Student Center in Brenham. Beginning Monday, July 15, Texans may visit this temporary office for full, in-person DL services. Members of the Texas Highway Patrol will also office at this location. “Members of DPS’ Driver License Division and the entire Brenham community have shown great strength and resilience in the aftermath of the DPS Brenham Station tragedy just a few short months ago,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “I thank Blinn College for allowing us to use their student center so that we can best serve customers in the Brenham area.” “I am grateful to the Texas Department of Public Safety and Blinn College for stepping up to create a temporary driver license office in Washington County,” said state Senator Lois Kolkhorst. “This means residents will now have a convenient location to access services from DPS for driver license renewals and other ID services. A local collaboration like this is a shining example of government working together to deliver services until a permanent DPS location is operational.” Following the tragic events and subsequent closure of DPS’ Brenham Station on April 12, area customers received essential DL services by visiting nearby DPS office locations. DPS’ new temporary DL office at the Blinn College Student Center will better serve customers in Brenham and surrounding communities, providing a closer, more convenient option for customers to complete DL transactions.
