The owners of a Northgate restaurant continues its 11th hour attempts to remain in a rented building that’s in the process of being sold by the city of College Station.
Cafe Eccell has been in the original city hall for 25 years. The owners have an online petition and have returned to district court seeking an injunction. Tuesday is their last day.
City manager Kelly Templin issued a statement that Cafe Eccell had 11 months to make arrangements with the new property owner or find an alternative location.
The restaurant owners, who had agreed to mediation after filing their original lawsuit last month, is again asking a judge to block the city’s sale to a Houston developer. No hearing date has been set.

The following statement is from College Station City Manager Kelly Templin:
City staff and city council share the community’s concern about the possibility of a College Station without Café Eccell, since it’s been a terrific dining destination for many years. And although the restaurant’s ownership currently has filed a lawsuit against the city -– invoking our long-standing policy of not offering public comment — we feel we must break our silence in order to provide some clarification.
Café Eccell was not sent a letter out of the blue requiring them to vacate the premises; rather, the letter reminded the restaurant’s ownership of what they agreed to on Feb. 14, 2013, when the terms of their lease were renewed: The lease was extended 45 days – at Café Eccell’s request – from Dec. 1, 2013 to Jan. 14, 2014 in order to allow for holiday business.
Café Eccell has had 11 months to reach an agreement with the purchaser of the property or to arrange for an alternate location. Unfortunately, it appears they’ve done neither.
We sincerely hope the Dallis family is able to find another location for Café Eccell. That’s what their loyal employees deserve and certainly what their faithful customers desire.
