UPDATE: Burleson County Sheriff’s Investigating Kidnapping-Suicide Incident

Update:

The Burleson County Sheriff’s office is investigating a case of domestic violence involving a kidnapping where the victim got away followed by the suspect killing himself.

Sheriff Dale Stroud says they received a call from the father of a 20 year old woman who was concerned for her safety being with a soon to be ex-boyfriend.

Stroud says on a narrow county road west of Cook’s Point, a 36 year old man from Caldwell was in his pickup and blocked the woman’s vehicle. The suspect got out and took her to the truck with the keys and her purse still inside her vehicle.

The sheriff says the woman was able to send texts to her brother relaying her location. The suspect drove from near Caldwell into Milam County near Gause, to near Hearne, then south on FM 50 to an oil well pad, where the text messages stopped.

Stroud said his deputies along with Brazos County, a Texas Ranger, various constables, and DPS troopers checked numerous oil pads along 50 between Highway 21 west of Bryan and Highway 79 west of Hearne.

Two hours after the last text, a DPS trooper found the pickup. Stroud says that resulted in multiple officers pursuing the pickup south on 50 to 21, then west through Cook’s Point to a county road. Along the way, the suspect called dispatchers in Caldwell and according to Stroud “he told them he was not going to stop, he was taking the woman home, and that he had nothing to lose. Speeds during the pursuit did not exceed 60 miles per hour.

Stroud said on the county road close to where the woman lived the truck’s tires were spiked, slowing the pickup to a “fast walk”. That’s when the woman opened the door and jumped out, where she was met by officers.

The sheriff said the suspect took his life with a 30-30 rifle, the pickup stayed in gear and rolled off the road into some brush and came to a stop.

The identities of the victim and the suspect were not released.

Dale Stroud visits with WTAW’s Kat McMullen.
