BTU Board Sends to City Council a $70 Million Bond Package

More construction is on the horizon for Bryan’s electric utility. The BTU board this week sent to the city council for final approval, a $70 million dollar bond package.

$43 million goes towards 29 miles of new transmission lines and a couple of substations to serve a growing customer base in Wellborn and surrounding areas.

Another $17 million goes towards refinancing existing bonds at a lower interest rate that will save BTU $1.5 million. And the remainder will finish BTU’s conversion to automated electric meters.

BTU Chief Financial Officer Joe Hegwood says the bond package won’t increase electric rates for local customers. The transmission project will be paid by by all members of the state’s ERCOT electric grid. And the automated meters will be paid by cost savings.

The Bryan City Council considers final action during its meeting March 27th.
