Bryan, Somerville, and Iola are among the locations of large storage amounts of ammonium nitrate, following a voluntary inspection of facilities by the state fire marshal’s office.
DALLAS (AP) _ The Texas Fire Marshal’s Office has launched a website that lets Texans search for facilities with large amounts of ammonium nitrate, the chemical that ignited in an April fertilizer plant explosion and killed 15 people.
The online program allows residents to enter a ZIP code and see if that code has an ammonium nitrate storage facility with more than 10,000 pounds, or 5 tons.
The Fire Marshal’s Office found 110 facilities in 71 Texas counties that have that amount or more.
It’s part of an effort by the office to better detail stocks of the potentially hazardous chemical.
For security reasons, officials haven’t posted a full list of facilities online or specific details about each facility.
