Monday’s Bryan school board meeting addressed closing out the budget for the 2015-16 school year and getting another look at the proposed fiscal year 2017 (FY 2017) budget that starts September 1.
Six members in attendance (John Street was absent) were not opposed to recommendations from assistant superintendent Amy Drozd to move $5.8 million dollars not spent in this year’s budget for expenses to be paid in the FY 2017 budget.
The carryover will pay for $3 million in maintenance projects, up from $500,000 the year before, $1,250,000 to cover part of the increased cost of the district’s new teacher pay plan, a new expenditure of $1.2 million for building insurance deductibles, continue $1 million for technology purchases, and $350,000 for the district’s capital asset fund, up from $300,000.
Drozd also reported the proposed FY 2017 budget forecasts a deficit of $2.3 million dollars. If that is not made up by increased enrollment, which generates more state aid, then Drozd says the board can consider spending some of the money being carried over from FY 2016. The only committed expense is the new teachers pay plan.
A public hearing on Bryan ISD’s FY 2017 budget will be held August 15 at 6 p.m. at the BISD board room.
