More than a month ahead of schedule, the possibility of tattoo businesses in downtown Bryan returns Thursday night to the Planning and Zoning Commission.
A proposal from a subcommittee of four commission members would allow tattoo studios in the south downtown zoning district and require a conditional use permit. That’s where Arsenal Tattoo wants to move into a building under reconstruction at 26th and Sims.
The subcommittee also wants two changes in city-wide regulations, one that new tattoo studios would have to be at least one mile from competitors and the floor space would be between 3,000 and 5,000 square feet. The city regulation would also add the state requirement banning the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The subcommittee was also asked to review all land uses in downtown Bryan’s three zoning districts. The group decided to let that be handled by another subcommittee, which in a few weeks will began an update of the city’s comprehensive plan. For downtown, it will be the first review since a master plan was adopted in 2001.
