Two law enforcement officers based in Bryan received awards during the last meeting of the Texas public safety commission

A Bryan police officer was recognized for his response to a crash in Leon County last June. BPD officer Colton Walch was still a cadet without formal first aid training when he came upon a vehicle that rolled over before first responders arrived. Walch found one person ejected in the road, two still trapped in the vehicle and the fourth person underwater in a creek. According to a news release, Walch immediately went to the creek and pulled the underwater victim to safety, after which she was able to breathe on her own. Walch saw the woman had head and leg injuries and remained by her side until medical personnel arrived and took her to a hospital. For those actions, Walch received a lifesaving award from DPS director Steven McCraw.

A DPS special agent from Bryan was one of 13 officers from four agencies who recently received state awards for their part in breaking up a drug trafficking operation in east Texas. Jimmy Burkett participated in a three year investigation resulting in more than 60 arrests and the seizure of 44 firearms, more than $43,000 dollars in cash, 17 pounds of methamphetamine, two pounds of cocaine, and one and a half pounds of heroin. A DPS unit citation and DPS director’s awards were presented.
