This week’s Bryan city council meeting opened with the presentation of three citizen awards by the police and fire departments.
Officer Kelley McKethan said on the morning of May 14th, Leonardo and Lydia Garcia pulled over and found a vehicle had struck a tree and was smoking.
While Mrs. Garcia called 9-1-1, Mr. Garcia flagged down another passerby, Jose Elano Castro-Perez.
The men were able to get a three year old child named Miracle out of the back seat as flames started appearing.
The vehicle became engulfed in flames and the front driver’s door was stuck, preventing the men from getting the child’s mother out of the vehicle.
The crash took place off Harvey Mitchell Parkway near the Denny’s in north Bryan.

Leonardo and Lydia Garcia and Jose Elano Castro-Perez
On May 14, 2017, at approximately 0833 hours, Leonardo Garcia and his wife, Lydia Garcia, were traveling south in the 2100 block of N. Harvey Mitchell Parkway when Lydia noticed smoke coming from the brush line about 50 feet off the roadway.
They found a vehicle had struck a tree and was smoking.
Leonardo got out of the car to see if he could help while Lydia called dispatch.
Leonardo found the doors locked and the cabin filling with thick smoke so he went back to his vehicle to retrieve a tire iron.
He flagged down another passerby, Jose Elano Castro-Perez, to help him.
Together Leonardo and Jose went to the smoking vehicle and broke the windows with the tire iron.
Jose was able to unlock the rear driver’s side door and pried it open.
Leonardo reached into the vehicle, which was now beginning to show active flames, and picked up 3 year old Miracle Castillo from the back seat.
He rushed her to Lydia and went back to the vehicle.
Unfortunately the vehicle was now engulfed in flames and the front driver’s door was stuck.
Despite Leonardo and Jose’s heroic efforts, there was nothing else they could do to help the driver.
Miracle’s mother, 22 year old Isabel Castillo, tragically did not survive the crash.
Lydia comforted Miracle as she was being treated by medical personnel and rode in the ambulance to the hospital with her, taking care of her until family arrived.
Had it not been for Lydia seeing the accident and the fast actions of Leonardo and Jose there is no doubt Miracle would not have survived this incident.
Leonardo and Jose ignored the perilous danger to save a life, which is a value we want to uphold for our community.
