Bryan Parks List Totals Over $43 Million

The Bryan city council learned during a workshop this week the list of wants and needs for city parks adds up to an estimated $43.7 million dollars.

The specific list of individual items was not presented by city staff. The presentation addressed how staff arrived at the estimate.

The general breakdown is $42.9 million in capital improvements, $797,500 in additional operations and maintenance items, and $54,400 for normal operations and maintenance items.

The city maintains 707 acres of parks with a budget of $1,877,701. That’s an average of $2,656 per acre, which according to city staff is below the national average, which ranges from $3,487 to $18,747 per acre.

Bryan has a total of 52 parks containing 2,408 acres. That includes 561 acres of traditional parks, the municipal golf course which has 117 acres, and Lake Bryan, which has 1,730 acres.

Deputy city manager Hugh Walker says the first ever list has yet to be prioritized by parks department staff in conjunction with the city’s parks master plan.

The estimate does not include repairs to all four city pools, something the council charged staff last August to complete by the start of swimming season next spring.
