A Bryan man reverses his decision to ask for an early release from prison.
45 year old Jay Griffin III filed a motion in December 2024 to be placed on probation. That was four months after he was sentenced to two years in prison for drunk driving.
In October 2021, Griffin’s SUV struck two pedestrians, killing one visitor from Florida and causing severe injuries to the other visitor.
A spokeswoman in the Brazos County district attorney’s office told WTAW News that last Friday (February 7), when Griffin’s motion was scheduled to be heard in Brazos County district court, Griffin withdrew his request.
In August 2024, Griffin entered a plea agreement which gave him no right to appeal his punishment for a conviction of DWI with a child under the age of 15 in his SUV.
The prosecuting attorney wrote in his opposition to probation that “there was no mistake, confusion, or misunderstanding between the parties as to what was intended” by the plea agreement.
Griffin’s motion for an early release included three letters of support. One came from a retired Huntsville police chief. Another was from a Huntsville elementary school counselor and pastor. And the third letter came from the director of a former assistance program in Huntsville for young fathers.
