Last Thursday (February 5), 52 year old James Joseph Brown and the district attorney’s office reached an agreement on the punishment for the assault that happened in March of 2023.
Last October, Brown admitted to the assault, which happened after he tried to prevent officers from entering his home. The prison sentence also includes punishment for resisting arrest.
Brown’s criminal history over the last 25 years according to online court records shows one prior felony conviction, for DWI, and six misdemeanor convictions for driving related offenses.
Online Brazos County court records also show he is one of 28 men with the name James Brown.
News release from the Brazos County district attorney’s office:
On February 5, 2025, Judge John Brick sentenced James Brown, 52, to four years in prison for Assault on a Peace Officer and the maximum of one year in jail for the offense of Resisting Arrest following a punishment hearing. Brown previously pled guilty to the offenses on October 6, 2025.
On March 22, 2023, Bryan Police Officers Alexander Gonzales and Morgan Shirley responded to an elderly victim’s 911 phone call. The victim reported that her son, James Brown, had been abusing her physically and mentally over the course of four days. Throughout the investigation, the defendant attempted to prevent officers from entering the home and speaking with the victim. Officers repeatedly tried to speak with the defendant and deescalate the situation with the defendant, without success.
Ultimately, officers were required to push the defendant aside to speak with the victim and conduct the investigation. Brown responded to officer efforts to continue the investigation by cussing at Officer Gonzales, approaching him aggressively, and slapping his hand. When officers attempted to detain the defendant, he then punched Gonzales twice in the face. As a result, Brown was arrested for Assault on a Peace Officer.
While still on scene and also while being transported to the jail, Brown taunted officers and bragged about his assault.
Brown had numerous misdemeanor arrests and one prior felony probation conviction for DWI 3rd or more out of Brazos County in 2009.
Statement from assistant district attorneys Jordan Jordan and Jessica Escue: “Our law enforcement officers work to protect and serve our community everyday. When a defendant assaults an officer in the line of duty, we must send a message that we will protect our officers in the same way they protect us.”
