For the second time in 13 years, a Bryan man has been sentenced to prison for at least 40 years.

The Brazos County district attorney’s office reports a district court jury convicted 44 year old Corles Nash of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Then the jury issued a 45 year sentence for Nash threatening to kill an ex-girlfriend with a knife and leaving her with injuries that are consistent with being dragged and strangled.

The punishment range was 15 years to life, and prosecutors sought 60 years.

According to online records, Nash was sentenced to 40 years in 2005 for possession with the intent to sell controlled substances.

Additional information from the Brazos County district attorney’s office:

Judge Travis Bryan, III sentenced Corles Nash to 45 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The 272nd jury convicted Nash of assaulting his exgirlfriend on Wednesday night.

In the early morning hours of November 30, 2016, Nash’s ex girlfriend came to the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office to report that the defendant had assaulted her the night before and was threatening to come back to her house to assault her again.

As the victim was reporting the incident to the Sheriff’s Office, she continued to receive threatening messages from the defendant.

Deputy Steven Garon noted that the victim had visible injuries to her arms and neck, consistent with being drug and strangled.

The victim reported that the night before she came to the Sheriff’s Office, the defendant became upset with her when she refused to rekindle their relationship.

The defendant began accusing the victim of seeing another man via text message and threatened her repeatedly. The defendant then went over to her house, forced his way in, assaulted her, pulled a knife on her, and threatened to kill her.

The next day, the defendant continued to threaten the victim and told her he was on his way over to her house. The victim then fled to the Sheriff’s Office to report the assault.

At trial, prosecutors presented evidence of the defendant’s repeated threats via text message prior to the assault.

Two forensic experts, Brian Hagen and Paul Price testified that the threatening texts came from the defendant’s phone. Detective Jared Cleere of the College Station Police Department testified that cell tower records confirmed that the defendant came over to the victim’s house in the middle of the night at times consistent with the threatening text messages.

At punishment, prosecutors presented evidence that Nash had previously been convicted of Aggravated Assault against a Peace Officer, Taking a Weapon from a Peace Officer, Attempting to take a Weapon from a Peace Officer, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Possession with Intent to Deliver Cocaine.

While on parole for these offenses, the defendant repeatedly had his parole revoked for assaulting his ex-wife and failing to comply with the rules of parole.
