West Bryan appears to be getting its first retail center.
The Bryan City Council Tuesday gave first-round approval to rezoning the northwest corner of Villa Maria and Harvey Mitchell Parkway.
A 150,000 square foot Wal-Mart will be the anchor store.
The council then gave a Houston developer a $5 million dollar sales tax rebate over a 15 year period, along with paying up to $250,000 for a traffic signal at Villa Maria and Jaguar.
Councilman Art Hughes represents the area and responded to those opposing the economic incentive by saying westside residents have needed this development for years.
Comments from Art Hughes.
Councilman Chuck Konderla expects this to spur additional residential construction.
Comments from Chuck Konderla.
For the developer to get the money, construction is supposed to start within two years and be completed in 18 months.
The sales tax revenue the developer receives will be reduced by any loss of business at the Wal-Mart on Briarcrest.
Conditions of rezoning more than 50 acres incorporates new building design standards as adopted earlier in the day by the planning and zoning commission.
