Bryan Council Moves Forward On Two Road Projects, One Which Will Accommodate Another New Industry

Bryan ISD officials say a disturbance during Friday’s (March 21) fourth grade track and field meet at Merrill Green stadium resulted in an arrest. A BISD news release says no one was injured and a man was arrested for making a terroristic threat. The BISD release said the man who administrators said threatened to shoot several bystanders. The man was not in possession of any weapons. The man was taken into custody by Bryan police school resource officers. Bryan police identified the man who was arrested as 29 year old John Villalpando of Bryan. Online jail records show Villalpando was charged with three counts of making a terroristic threat causing fear of imminent serious bodily injury. Friday’s arrest marks his 13th booking in the Brazos County jail since October of 2013. Villalpando was arrested Tuesday (March 18) and released Wednesday (March 19) after posting bond on a charge of not having vehicle insurance. At the time of Friday’s arrest, a spokeswoman in the Brazos County district attorney’s office confirmed that Villalpando was on probation for felony evading arrest with a vehicle in an incident that took place in June 2017. News release from Bryan ISD: While there has been no disruption to Bryan ISD activities and all students, staff, and families are safe, we wanted to inform you about an incident that took place earlier today at Merrill Green Stadium during the annual 4th Grade Track Meet. All school activities have proceeded as planned and have not been interrupted. At the event, an adult male was taken into custody by the Bryan Police Department after creating a disturbance. The subject, who verbally threatened to shoot several bystanders, was quickly located and detained by Bryan Police Department School Resource Officers. The male was not in possession of any weapons and was taken into custody for Terroristic Threats. As you know, the Bryan Police Department and Bryan ISD work in partnership to keep our students, families and staff safe. Also, we encourage our students and families to report safety concerns immediately through our B-Safe App. We are thankful for the prompt response from our campus SROs. As stated above, Bryan Police acted quickly and efficiently and removed the suspect immediately from the premises.

Brazos County commissioners take the next step on two building projects. Commissioners approved for the county’s new office building across Texas Avenue from the courthouse, a $50 million dollar construction contract and a $4.5 million dollar architect’s contract. The complex includes an office building, a walkway over Texas Avenue to connect to the courthouse, and an employee parking garage. And commissioners approve the $2.25 million dollar purchase of a building across Villa Maria from Bryan Collegiate High School to be the new home of 9-1-1 operations for the county and the city of Bryan. The Bryan police department is advising motorists of the city’s first intersection involving a median that no longer allows a right turn on a red light. Officer Seth Waller says the first location is by the post office, affecting motorists making a right turn from Nash to William Joel Bryan (WJB) towards the freeway.  Waller says that’s because WJB traffic headed towards downtown can make a U-turn at Nash. Waller says officers have been issuing warnings. Speaking on March 20, 2025, Waller said officers will start issuing tickets in about a week or so.
