For the second time in nine months, the Bryan city council has had an extensive discussion of increasing the number of new and existing homes for sale to what’s described as workforce families, or those who meet low income guidelines.
According to the city of Bryan, there are only two new homes for sale at a price of under $175,000 dollars. And the average home price is more than $312,000.
There are also 34 existing homes available for under $175,000. But the average price of an existing home for sale in Bryan is $337,000 dollars.
Additionally, over the last ten years the median income of a Bryan family has increased by $5,000 dollars…while the median price of a new home during the same period has risen $66,000 dollars and an existing home by $49,000 dollars.
That led to the Bryan council being asked again by staff to increase the number of not only new and existing homes, but also provide repair assistance and find rental properties to low income residents.
Community development manager Alsie Bond says she will be meeting with the council behind closed doors in the future to explore how the city can buy vacant lots where developers can build homes.
The council is also being asked for an undisclosed amount of local money to supplement federal funding to pay for minor repairs to existing owner occupied homes, and give grants to landlords to repair substandard and dilapidated housing.
