The Bryan city council is taking the next step in converting the former municipal golf course and adjacent land into a superpark.
The council is dipping into reserves to pay an unbudgeted $487,000 dollars to hire a consultant.
The one chosen out of 13 who expressed interest, will do a preliminary design and a preliminary engineering report.
That also includes collecting public input and doing an environmental report.
The park design will also contemplate the impact the superpark will have on the city’s drainage system.
All that is supposed to be done by the end of September.
Deputy city manager Hugh Walker says the consultant will not only transform the former golf course, but consider the impact on the adjacent Astin Recreation Area and Williamson Park.
The consultant stands to earn another one to four million dollars for the final design, overseeing the bidding and awarding of a construction bid, then supervising the construction. That’s based on the construction cost of between 10 and 50 million dollars. There was no council discussion about the funding source for the final design and construction.
The city’s conceptual plan calls for two sets of four baseball/softball fields…each with its own restaurant…along with seven football and soccer fields, four basketball courts, pickleball and badminton courts, sand volleyball, an all-inclusive playground, and an amphitheater.
