Brenham Highway Closed Following Violent Head-On Crash

Highway 36 in northwest Brenham, near the junction of FM 577, was closed much of Wednesday following a head-on crash that killed a Temple man.

DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan says the victim, 31 year old Lazaro Esparza Jr. of Temple, was driving a small pickup that drifted into the other lane and was struck by a semi hauling oil.

Morgan says the impact was so violent that Esparza was ejected from from the cab but was still strapped in his seat belt. The driver of the semi was not injured.

The semi and tanker trailer caught fire, damaging the road surface. TxDOT closed the highway, causing traffic to be routed through Brenham.

Jimmy Morgan visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.
