BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (June 8, 2021) — In the team’s first Trivia Tuesday of the season, the Brazos Valley Bombers fell 4-1 to the Victoria Generals.
The one-off game gave the Generals, who split a two-game series with the Bombers earlier this summer, a leg up on the season. Even on a night when the navy and gold struggled offensively, the atmosphere at Edible Field still buzzed, filled with trivia questions, discounted beer and an appearance by members of the Brazos Valley Cavalry FC soccer squad. This energy will likely be matched Wednesday when the team celebrates its first Margaritaville Wednesday featuring $2 Mad Ritas from Mad Taco.
Not wanting to waste any time, the Bombers took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Shelby Becker secured one bag on a blooper to left field, then made it all the way back home on three wild pitches. Bombers head coach James Dillard said the recently-crowned TCL Hitter of the Week did exactly what the team expected of him for the night.
“Shelby’s incredibly hot right now,” Dillard said. “He’s not missing pitches. That’s huge. Him swinging a good bat should turn over to a couple more guys on our lineup. Once that happens, we’ll be able to relax a little bit at the plate.”
The Generals quickly fired back, scoring two runs across the second and third innings to set the new score at 1-2.
Victoria added salt to the wound in the top of the ninth, plating two more runs with the help of an error and two base hits to the outfield.
Brazos Valley forced pressure multiple times throughout the night, highlighted by two bases-loaded situations, but no new runs came to fruition. The remainder of the game finished scorelessly.
Even in defeat, the Bombers bullpen did its best to put on a good showing. Led by Simon Miller, the pitching rotation notched nine strikeouts. Tyler Miller and Dylan Johnson each recorded 0.00 ERA appearances on the night.
After Tuesday’s one-off, Brazos Valley falls to a 4-4 record while Victoria crawls slowly upward to 2-5 on the season. The Bombers return to Edible Field Wednesday, June 9 for part one of a two-game series against the Amarillo Sod Squad. With first pitch set for 7:05 p.m., fans can expect an evening full of baseball, excitement and family-friendly entertainment.
Dillard said the Wednesday game may be the most competitive head-to-head matchup the Brazos Valley has seen all summer.
“The Sod Squad is a good ball club, and they’ve gotten even better since we last played them,” Dillard said. “They’re going to pitch well, hit well, and play defense well. We’re going to have to score some runs. Once that happens, we’ll be okay.”
