Brazos County Judge Questions Size of Proposed Appraisal District Building

Brazos County Commissioners this week tabled a request from the appraisal district to support construction of a new office building.

The request returns for consideration at next Tuesday’s meeting.

County Judge Duane Peters wants the appraisal district to review whether it needs all the space its proposing. That’s based on the county building a new tax and voter registration office that’s 10,500 square feet and accommodates 44 employees.

The Brazos Central Appraisal District (BCAD) is proposing a 14,000 square foot building where there are 26 employees.

BCAD chief appraiser Mark Price says they will take another look at plans that began nearly five years ago. Price says their space requirements reflects the difference in how their staff interacts with the public.

The appraisal district needs approval by four of the five agencies that provides funding to proceed with the $3.8 million dollar project. The College Station school board gave its blessing last week. The proposal is on future agendas of the Bryan school board and the College Station and Bryan city councils.
