An inmate at the Brazos County Jail who had been told he was being moved to a disciplinary unit is now in isolation.

41 year old Juan Cervantes of Bryan is accused of rushing a detention officer just before shift change Monday morning and striking him 12 times.

Sheriff Chris Kirk says other inmates pulled Cervantes away from the deputy after what he called “a brutal (and) quick attack.”

The detention officer, who according to the arrest report did not fight back, was taken to the hospital for evaluation then returned to finish his report before going home for the day.

Cervantes was arrested two weeks ago for assaulting an 80 year old downtown Bryan businessowner so hard he fell to the floor and hit his head on a chair.
