A proclamation read at this week’s Brazos County commissioners court meeting by county judge Duane Peters brought attention to the abuse of local seniors and the disabled.
In 2017, Texas Adult Protective Services (APS) caseworkers in Brazos County investigated 504 intakes, of which 363 cases of abuse, neglect and/or exploitation were confirmed against elderly and disabled residents.
Tiffany Woodard, who is a supervisor at the Bryan APS office, says they receive 30 reports a month. She also says the number of elder abuse victims is under reported.
The proclamation notes elder abuse happens to men and women of all income levels, in all cultural and ethnic groups, and whether they are in good health or incapacitated in some way.
