The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced the latest in detours and closures associated with the “Big 6” Construction project: Monday, July 27 Southbound mainlane between Barron Road and William D. Fitch Parkway – Full Closure – 8 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. All traffic must exit through the southbound William D. Fitch Parkway exit ramp and may re-enter the mainlanes just north of William D. Fitch Parkway. Please note that exit ramp closures begin at 7:30 p.m. Northbound and southbound mainlanes between Harvey Road and Rock Prairie Drive – Single-lane Closures – 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. The northbound mainlane left lane will be closed for dirt work in the center median. The southbound mainlane left lane will be closed between Harvey Road and Texas Avenue for dirt work in the center median. Southbound Texas Avenue – Turn Lane Closure The southbound Texas Avenue left turn lane just north of the southbound frontage road traffic signal (at business entrance for Mojo Taco/Burger King/SmartStop Self Storage) will be closed starting 8 a.m. on Monday, July 27, through 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, to install drainage work across the business entrance driveway. Tuesday, July 28 Northbound and southbound mainlanes between Harvey Road and Rock Prairie Drive – Single-lane Closures – 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. The northbound mainlane left lane will be closed for dirt work in the center median. The southbound mainlane left lane will be closed between Harvey Road and Texas Avenue for dirt work in the center median. Southbound frontage road between Barron Road and William D. Fitch Parkway – Single-lane Closure – 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. The southbound frontage road left lane will be closed to set traffic barrier. Additionally, the southbound William D. Fitch Parkway exit ramp and entrance ramp just north of William D. Fitch Parkway will be closed. Traffic can access William D. Fitch Parkway by exiting through the southbound Barron Road exit ramp and may re-enter the mainlanes south of William D. Fitch Parkway. Wednesday, July 29 Northbound and southbound mainlanes between Harvey Road and Rock Prairie Drive – Single-lane Closures – 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. The northbound mainlane left lane will be closed for dirt work in the center median. The southbound mainlane left lane will be closed between Harvey Road and Texas Avenue for dirt work in the center median. Thursday, July 30 Northbound and southbound mainlanes between Harvey Road and Rock Prairie Drive – Single-lane Closures – 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. The northbound mainlane left lane will be closed for dirt work in the center median. The southbound mainlane left lane will be closed between Harvey Road and Texas Avenue for dirt work in the center median. Friday, July 31 Northbound and southbound mainlanes between Harvey Road and Rock Prairie Drive – Single-lane Closures – 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 a.m. The northbound mainlane left lane will be closed for dirt work in the center median. The southbound mainlane left lane will be closed between Harvey Road and Texas Avenue for dirt work in the center median. TxDOT encourages drivers to watch for changing traffic patterns, be sure to follow signs, and to always use caution.
The City of College Station announced today that current City Councilman Bob Yancy will be running for Mayor on the November ballot. He is the first to file to have his name on the ballot. Mayor John Nichols announced last week on the Infomaniacs that he would not be seeking re-election. Yancy was first elected to Council Place 5 in 2022 and still has just over two years remaining on his term after his re-election in 2024. According to the City charter and the Texas Constitution, a sitting council member with more than 13 months left in their four-year-term would automatically resign from their current position when announcing their candidacy. However, there is a “holdover” provision that allows for that councilmember to remain in their seat until a successor can be elected. This is a stop gap that allows Council to continue to conduct business. This now means that there will be a special election for Council Place 5 on the November ballot for someone to fill the remainder of Yancy’s four-year term. This will be in addition to four-year-terms for Council Place 1 and Council Place 5, and of course…Mayor.
Two Caldwell area teenagers got busted trying to shoplift from the West Bryan Walmart on Sunday. Police were called to the store on Harvey Mitchell Parkway after Walmart’s loss prevention team says the duo tried to steal 15 items. Surveillance video caught 18-year-old Alianna Mayeli Gonzales and 19-year-old Breann Christia Sims using the self-checkout and intentionally bagging several items without scanning them. Items they did not scan included a comforter set ($75.00) a bed sheet set ($69.97), miscellaneous clothing items ($61.90), slime toys ($17.97), and energy drinks ($11.22), along with a few additional miscellaneous consumer goods. Total value of the 15 items stolen is $254.96 (before tax). Walmart’s loss prevention team stopped the women as they attempted to leave the store and confirmed the aforementioned items were not on the receipt. Gonzalez and Sims were charged with theft greater than $100, but less than $750, and booked into the Brazos County Jail. Both were released today on $4,000 bond, each.
