Boonville Heritage Park Completing First Phase

The front of Boonville Cemetery in Bryan, located on the original Brazos County seat, continues to be transformed into a historical park.

Sponsored by the William Joel Bryan chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, vice-president Mervin Peters says the first phase of Boonville Heritage Park is expected to be completed by the end of July.

Earlier this month, the Brazos County Commission unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the placement of the flags in the six flag plaza, which can be seen by passing motorists along with the restored cabin that was built in 1856.

The first phase also includes a replica of a Twin Sisters cannon which was used in the battle of San Jacinto that led to Texas becoming a republic, and a pavilion for the cannon.

Peters says there have been many local contributors, providing financial and technical assistance as well as donating heirlooms.

Private fundraising of the $550,000 project has reached $300,000. Those considering a contribution of any type can contact Peters at 979-777-9090.
