Blinn Trustees Get More Feedback About HB 1903 and Address House Committee About HB 2621

Blinn College trustees during Tuesday’s monthly meeting received more feedback about proposed state legislation to restrict spending revenue to the campus where it’s generated.

After receiving proclamations for national championship programs, the sponsors of the Brenham based cheerleading and livestock judging teams called on the board to continue funding their programs. That’s a reference to the impact if HB 1903 passes.

A faculty member on the Brenham campus, Mary Lange, described the home campus as a human body that needs rehabilitation.

Three faculty members from the Bryan campus said a faculty senate meeting was cancelled where a vote was scheduled on a resolution to negotiate with representative John Raney, the author of HB 1903.

One who spoke was Nathan Giesenschlag.

Two others, Dr. Blanche Brick and Dr. Linda Jones, submitted letters.

Brazos County campus president Dr. Sylvia McMullen told WTAW News she could neither confirm or deny what was said or written concerning the proposed Faculty Senate resolution.

Trustees vice-president Atwood Kenjura referred to Giesenschlag’s statement during prepared remarks.

Kenjura was one of two board members who thanked Carolyn Miller, who resigned last Friday, for her work. Board president Douglas Borchardt read Miller’s resignation letter then called for a motion to approve the resignation. While the motion was made immediately after the request, there was silence for 15 seconds before Borchardt asked again for a second.

A Blinn delegation went to Austin Wednesday to appear before the House Higher Education Committee on another bill written by Rep. Raney. HB 2621, which has a companion bill co-sponsored by the senator who represents Bryan, Charles Schwertner, and Brenham, Lois Kolkhorst, would add two Brazos County residents to the Blinn board.

The only person who spoke besides Raney was Dr. McMullen. She detailed the college’s Brazos County advisory committee; which meets four times a year and is made up of business and government officials from Bryan and College Station along with representation from Texas A&M.

No action was taken by the committee.
