AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Two Gulf Coast legislators today filed a bill to allow Texas voters to decide whether to allow casino gambling in Galveston and other parts of the state.
Some have suggested allowing casino gambling in Galveston is a way to revitalize the island city after last year’s destructive Hurricane Ike.
Democratic Reps. Carol Alvarado and Craig Eiland are trying to pass the proposed state constitutional amendment. The measure would allow casino gambling on barrier islands adjacent to Gulf Coast counties and in big cities with populations over 675,000, like Houston.
It also calls for allowing casinos on American Indian lands in Texas and at existing racetracks.
Republican Gov. Rick Perry has said he doesn’t think there’s the appetite in the Legislature this year to expand gambling in Texas.
