Baseball Outduels Auburn to Advance to SEC Tournament Semifinals

HOOVER, Alabama – Sophomore left-hander John Doxakisdominated, taking a no-hitter into the eighth, as the Texas A&M Aggies punched their ticket to the SEC Tournament semifinal round in a 4-2 win over the Auburn Tigers on Thursday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

Doxakis (7-5) faced two over the minimum through the first seven innings before Jay Estes, the first batter in the eighth, reached on an infield single. Doxakis finished the day with 7.1 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits and two hit batsmen while striking out 10.

Nolan Hoffman came on with a pair in scoring position and induced two quick groundouts to get out of the eighth. Hoffman tied Jason Jester (2013) for the A&M single-season saves record as he 14th of the season. The pairing of Hoffman and Doxakis fanned 12 and allowed just one non-infield hit to the Tiger offense.

Zach DeLoach led Texas A&M at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one sacrifice fly, one run and two RBI. George Janca was 2-for-3 with two runs. Braden Shewmake added a two-run double.

The Aggies get the day off before returning to action for a noon game on Saturday against the winner of Friday’s Auburn-Ole Miss elimination game.

SCORING SUMMARY
B3 | The Aggies broke the scoring seal in the home half of the third off Auburn’s First Team All-SEC pitcher Casey Mize (9-5). With one out, Janca singled up the middle and with two outs he moved to second on a wild pitch. DeLoach gapped a single to right-center to plate Janca with the lid-lifter. A&M 1, AU 0.

B6 | Texas A&M tacked on two runs in the sixth. With one out, DeLoach reached on an infield single and Michael Helman gapped a single to left-center to put runners on the corners. Braden Shewmake smacked a double down the rightfield line to knock in two runs. A&M 3, AU 0.

T8 | After being held hitless for seven frames, Estes led off with an infield single. Estes stole second base as Luke Jarvis was looking at strike three and he scored when Conor Davis hit a wall-banger to centerfield. A&M 3, AU 1.

B8 | The Aggies responded with a run in the home half of the eighth. Janca threaded a lead-off single through the left side of the infield, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Cole Bedford. A wild pitch put Janca on third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by DeLoach. A&M 4, AU 1.

T9 | After a Hoffman strikeout, Auburn put two runners on with a hit batsman and an infield single. Hoffman recorded his second strikeout of the frame before the Tigers brought the winning run to the plate, reaching on another infield hit that plated a run. Hoffman closed the door on the Aggie win. A&M 4, AU 2.
