B/CS Habitat for Humanity Begins Two New Projects

Habitat for Humanity is known for building houses, not tearing them down. But earlier this week, that is exactly what Habitat did to mark the start of a unique project.

Director of Development, Carl Orozco, says the partner family owns the land and an older trailer that needed many repairs.

“We are demoing the house so no one else can live in substandard housing, and we are building on the property right there,” says Orozco.

Orozco says Habitat hopes to do more projects on family-owned land because land is becoming scarce in the Bryan-College Station area.

Before demolition, the home was used for emergency response training by the Bryan Fire Department.

Habitat also announced its partnership with Bryan ISD for Bryan ISD Build.

Bryan ISD students, staff and community members will fundraise throughout the school year to build a new Habitat home. Students of an appropriate age will also help build the home.

News release from B/CS Habitat for Humanity:

Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity is set to begin demolition on a partner homebuyer’s land. The Saldivar family owns the lot and an older trailer in need of many repairs. Once the property and title work was completed, the household moved to a property that B/CS Habitat was able to provide temporarily as they work toward building their new home.

B/CS Habitat was able to partner with the Saldivar family through the organization’s recent initiative to work with households who own land but are in need of a decent home.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to perform demolition work on a trailer and build a new house on the same site,” says Nathan Touchette, Director of Property for B/CS Habitat. “Habitat is only allowed opportunities like this because we launched an initiative where we build on land owned by the partner families.”

Once the Saldivar family moved out, this property was used in B/CS Habitat for Humanity’s partnership with first responders in the community. The Bryan Fire Department has been able to use the trailer on this property to simulate different training opportunities for their recruits.
