Awards Presented to College Station PD & Brazos County Crimestoppers

Local law enforcement agencies recently picked up awards.

The international police chiefs association presented the College Station Police Department its annual award for investigations. College Station was among 23 finalilsts.

And Brazos County Crimestoppers was recently awarded a state honor for its activities last year and was recognized for 30 years of service.

College Station Police Chief Jeff Capps is pleased to announce that the College Station Police Criminal Investigations Division has received the prestigious Thomson Reuters Award for Excellence in Criminal Investigation from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Chief Capps, Assistant Chief Larry Johnson and Criminal Investigations Commander Lt. Lesley Hicks were among those present to receive the award at the annual conference for the IACP in Chicago IL on October 25, 2011.

The award recognizes “quality achievement and innovation in managing and conducting criminal investigations, with the goal of sharing information to advance the art and science of criminal investigations”.

In the letter announcing the award, IACP president Mark Marshall stated: The College Station Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division demonstrated a high degree of ingenuity and proficiency in the use of technological advances to develop proactive techniques to identify and apprehend suspects in several high profile capital murder cases. The division added significantly to the art and science of criminal investigations by developing innovative strategies including the use of video enhancement systems and forensic cell phone software to gather evidence that proved crucial to the resolution of these cases. It is the spirit of professional innovation, enterprise, and excellence that the members of the selection committee endorsed your department’s application as this year’s winner.”

The College Station Police Criminal Investigations Division was selected from 23 finalists to receive the award. I felt both proud and honored to have accepted such a prestigious national award on behalf of the hardworking men and women of the College Station Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. The tenacity, ingenuity and innovation displayed by this group is truly amazing as they are very deserving of this award.”  said Chief of Police Jeff Capps.

Brazos County Sheriff and Brazos County Crime Stopper’s Coordinator Christopher Kirk is pleased to announce that the Brazos County Crime Stoppers program has received the 2010 Productivity Award for the Most Cases Cleared/Greatest Dollar Recovery from the Office of the Governor’s Texas Crime Stoppers Council.  The award recognizes the program with a population of 150,000 to 200,000 from all the Texas Crime Stopper’s programs in Texas that had the Most Cases Cleared/Greatest Dollar Recovery in 2010.

Brazos County Crime Stoppers Board of Director’s Chairman Joy Sechelski and fellow board members Angela Bashaw, Lester Bashaw, Brooke Horak, Ann Schaefer and Ron Schaefer along with Assistant Coordinator Sharon Cortemelia were among those present to receive the award at the annual Texas Crime Stoppers conference in McAllen TX on October 25, 2011.

In 2010, Brazos County Crime Stoppers received 979 tips that led to the arrest of 116 fugitives and the clearing of 163 cases.  The tips also led to the recovery of 1 weapon, $28,776 of recovered property and $51,723 of illegal drugs.

On November 16, 2011, Brazos County Crime Stoppers, Inc. will celebrate its 30th Anniversary.

While in McAllen, Brazos County Crime Stoppers, Inc received a Declaration of Recognition signed by Texas Governor Rick Perry from the Office of the Governor Texas Crime Stoppers Council recognizing the 30th anniversary.

Since its inception, Brazos County Crime Stoppers has received 15,267 tips which have led to the arrest of 2,285 fugitives and helped clear 2,595 cases.  The tips have also led to the recovery of 44 weapons, $1,777,482 in recovered property and $1,441,893 in illegal drugs.

Brazos County Crime Stoppers, Inc has paid out $286,665 in reward monies to anonymous tipsters.
