Austin Congressional Candidate Dies

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Dr. Rick Martin, an Austin lawyer and anesthesiologist who was running for Congress, has died.

The chairwoman of the Travis County Republican Party, Rosemary Edwards, confirms the weekend death of Martin. The cause of death for the 53-year-old candidate was not immediately available.

Martin was challenging GOP Rep. Michael McCaul of Austin in the March 2 primary in District 10. Businessman Joe Petronis remains in the primary against McCaul.

McCaul issued a statement Monday offering condolences to the Martin family and praising the candidate for their “shared concerns about the direction of our government at a critical
time.”

Edwards said Tuesday that Martin’s name will remain on the March 2 ballot.

Martin, on his campaign Web site, said he had firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by small businesses from his experience managing an anesthesiology group and his law practice.
