Austin Condo Fire Displaces UT Students

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Investigators were trying to find out what caused a fire at a condominium complex that temporarily displaced about 60 University of Texas students.

The blaze caused about $500,000 in damage but no residents were injured at the Heritage Condominiums, which is located near the university and has many students living in it, Austin Fire Department spokesman Don Smith said Sunday.

The blaze, which started around 11 p.m. Friday, damaged seven of the complex’s 33 units.

Smith said temporary living arrangements were found for the 60 displaced students.

On Saturday, workers repaired water and electrical damage at the complex so residents could return. But Smith wasn’t sure if any residents had yet been able to return to the complex.

A number of residents were also away on spring break. Classes were scheduled to resume Monday.

The fire started on a second-floor balcony and spread to the third floor and attic area.
