Astros Power Past San Diego, Rangers Fall in Sweep to Seattle

Keuchel, Rasmus power Astros to 6th straight win, 7-2

SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Dallas Keuchel held San Diego to three hits in eight innings and Colby Rasmus hit a two-run homer to power the Houston Astros to their sixth straight win, 7-2 against the slumping San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

The AL West-leading Astros swept the Padres for the first time since May 8-10, 2009. First-year manager A.J. Hinch had worked in San Diego’s front office from September 2010 until just after A.J. Preller was hired as general manager in early August.

Houston outscored San Diego 30-9 and outhit the Padres 36-19.

The Astros head home after an 8-1 West Coast trip gave them the best road record in the majors, 10-2.

The Padres have lost seven of eight, including five of six on this homestand.

 

Morrison’s tiebreaking double helps Mariners beat Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) _ Logan Morrison had a tiebreaking, two-run double to back Felix Hernandez and lead the Seattle Mariners to a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

With the score tied 2-2 and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Morrison hit a ground ball past first base against Texas starter Wandy Rodriguez (0-1). Morrison finished 4 for 5, including two hits against Rodriguez to improve to 7 for 14 in his career against the left-hander.

Hernandez allowed five hits, two runs and one walk in 6 2-3 innings to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2009.

Fernando Rodney pitched a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save in eight opportunities. He saved all three games as the Mariners swept the series for their first three-game winning streak this season.

Seattle’s Nelson Cruz was 2 for 4, including his 10th home run to lead off the second inning.
