Astros Drop Sixth Straight; Moreland Powers Rangers Past A’s

ASTROS-WHITE SOX

Abreu, Rodon power White Sox past slumping Astros 4-2

CHICAGO (AP) _ Jose Abreu hit a tie-breaking two-run homer, Carlos Rodon threw six scoreless innings, and the Chicago White Sox beat Houston 4-2 on Tuesday night to hand the Astros their sixth straight loss despite top draft pick Carlos Correa hitting his first homer.

Abreu’s 10th home run of the season broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth and propelled Chicago to its second win to start the three-game series with the AL West-leading Astros.

The homer and Melky Cabrera’s two-run double in the eighth were enough for the White Sox to continue the Astros’ slide while Houston’s offensive woes continued.

Rodon (2-0) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five and throwing a career-high 116 pitches.

Except for Abreu’s home run, Keuchel (7-2) was strong in the loss.

RANGERS-ATHLETICS

Moreland homers, Martinez pitches Rangers past A’s 2-1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Mitch Moreland hit a long homer leading off the sixth inning, Nick Martinez outpitched Sonny Gray to win for the first time in more than two weeks, and the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Prince Fielder drove in a run and Shin-Soo Choo added two hits to help lead the Rangers to their major league-best 20th road win. Texas has won three of four on its current trip to pull within two games of AL West-leading Houston.

Moreland had gone hitless in 10 previous at-bats against Gray (7-3) before connecting for his seventh homer of the season on a 2-1 pitch from the Oakland ace. The ball easily cleared the wall in center field and bounced off the facade underneath a row of luxury seats.

Martinez (5-2) allowed one hit over six innings. He struck out three and walked three.
