Another Olsen win over Zags

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Sophomore Michael Wacha continued the trend of dominant performances by Aggie starting pitchers on Saturday at Olsen Field, leading the No. 8 Texas A&M baseball team to a 4-2 win over Gonzaga.

Wacha improved to 2-0 on the season by tossing seven shutout innings and limiting the Bulldogs to just five hits while striking out six and walking none. His outing lowered the combined season ERA of the Texas A&M starting pitchers to 0.23. As a group, the Aggie starters have allowed just one earned run in 40 innings of work this season.

The win also ensured the Aggies will claim their second straight victory of a weekend series following the sweep of Le Moyne during the season’s opening weekend. A&M’s winning streak of six to begin the campaign is the longest season-opening string of victories since the 2006 team rattled off 10 straight to begin the year.

Offensively, senior catcher Gregg Alcazar had two hits for the Aggies while sophomore right fielder Tyler Naquin and junior first baseman Jacob House each singled to extend their season-opening hitting streaks to six games.

For the third time in its last four games, A&M was able to push across a run in the bottom of the first inning to take early control of the contest. With only one out and runners on the corners, the Aggies fired the game’s opening salvo by executing a double-steal with freshman Krey Bratsen, who led off the inning with a single, swiping home and junior Matt Juengel taking second..

The Aggies added to their 1-0 lead with a trio of two-out runs in the bottom of the third inning. House got the initial big hit with an RBI single to right field and A&M was able to plate a second run on the play following a Gonzaga fielding error.

Alcazar, who recorded his fifth career multi-hit game, knocked in another Aggie tally with a run-scoring single through the left side.

Gonzaga (0-5) attempted to rally against the A&M bullpen during the eighth inning, however, the Bulldogs were only able to scratch across two runs. The Aggies got an impressive defensive play to end the threat as House was able to snatch a hard-hit line drive and beat the runner back to the first base bag to complete an inning-ending double play.

Junior closer Ross Stripling, pitching on back-to-back days for the first time in his career, locked down the win with his second save of the year. The right-hander from Southlake, Texas, needed only nine pitches to strike out the side and put the A&M victory in the books.

Texas A&M baseball is back in action Sunday when it guns for its seventh consecutive win and second straight sweep of a weekend opponent. First pitch between the Aggies and Bulldogs is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. with sophomore lefty Ross Hales (1-0; 0.00) getting the start for A&M. Gonzaga, meanwhile, will send senior right-hander Cody Martin (0-0; 0.00) to the mound as they seek their first victory of the season.
