A&M System Unveils San Antonio Campus

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ The Texas A&M University System is ready to give its first glimpse of a nearly 700-acre campus in San Antonio.

Gov. Rick Perry was expected to attend Thursday’s unveiling of the master plan for Texas A&M-San Antonio, which university officials say could open by 2011. Construction is expected to break ground later this year.

The goal is to have 25,000 students at the San Antonio university by 2028, which would make it the A&M system’s second-largest campus in the state.

Lawmakers authorized $40 million for the stand-alone campus if enrollment reached 1,500. The A&M system is currently about 500 students shy of that mark, but officials say they’re confident of hitting that number.

The University of Texas at San Antonio, currently the city’s only public university, has more than 28,000 students.
