A&M System Chancellor Calls For Flagship VP’s Resignations

Two weeks from his official first day at work, new Texas A&M President Michael Young will be getting letters of resignation from his top leadership.

That’s after A&M System Chancellor John Sharp sent a letter Thursday to the executive and senior vice presidents and the president’s special advisors and special assistants at the flagship campus.

Sharp says it’s an extension of the traditional resignation of the provost when a new president is hired, and something the chancellor talked about with the leadership team at the flagship campus and elsewhere in the system over the last six months.

The letter calls for the vice presidents to submit letters of resignation “with an open-ended date”, with the option to be reassigned to the faculty or other available staff duties.

Young will have until May 1 of 2016, one year from his first day, to decide whether to accept the resignations, but the letter also notes Young “would also be able to request those resignations after that date if he believes it would best serve the University.”

Sharp says the same practice will be employed in future hiring of not only system presidents but chancellors as well.

The chancellor also told WTAW News the new president is in town, where he is recuperating from knee surgery. Sharp says he visits regularly with Young, as does interim president Dr. Mark Hussey.
