A&M System Announces Savings on Employee Rx Coverage

The Texas A&M University System has announced saving $6.5 million dollars in fiscal year 2013 in its employee prescription drug coverage program.

System officials announced a three-year extension of its contract with Medco, which currently provides services for 40,000 employees, retirees and their dependents that are enrolled in the self-insured employee group health plan.

System Director of Risk Management Kevin McGinnis says this bucks a trend of annual increases of seven to nine percent.

McGinnis says there are no changes in coverage, and he expects similar savings in the second and third years of the new agreement, which starts September 1st.

Kevin McGinnis visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.

Meantime, the first deadline has passed in four service areas the system is investigating to outsource. Vice President for Communications Steve Moore says he didn’t know how many companies are interested in taking over dining services at the flagship campus. Proposals for building maintenance, custodial, and landscaping at system offices Brazos County are due on various days next week.
