A Texas A&M University student accused of taking off someone else’s Aggie ring and tossing it into a field has been cleared of any wrongdoing.
The Brazos County District Attorney’s Office will not be prosecuting anyone related to last weekend’s campus incident involving rival fraternities. No charges will be filed against anyone, according to Kara Comte of the DA’s office, because there was no evidence the victim was deprived of his ring.
Thomas Slauter was arrested following a fight near the Administration Building last Saturday. Slauter’s attorney, Craig Greaves, says the guilty party and the victim both called him and were ready to defend Slauter.
Then Greaves contacted the DA’s office, and thanked their attorneys and investigators for their speed in resolving the case.
While there will be no prosecution and Greaves says Slauter’s arrest will be removed from court records, that doesn’t wipe out what’s on the Internet.
Greaves says there was media coverage because Justice of the Peace George Boyett set a $50,000 bond. Greaves says that was after staff at the Brazos County Jail were going to release his client on an $8,000 bond. Greaves says the lower amount matched the local bond schedule involving a theft charge with no aggravating circumstances.
A woman answering the JP’s phone Wednesday afternoon said Boyett was out of the office but was scheduled to return Thursday.
