Texas A&M senior Tyra White was named to the 2011-12 preseason “Wade Watch” list for the State Farm® Wade Trophy as announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
The esteemed 25-member preseason list is composed of top NCAA Division I student-athletes from 17 institutions and seven conferences who best embody Wade’s spirit. A committee of coaches, administrators and media from across the United States compiled the list using the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
Now in its 35th year, the State Farm Wade Trophy is named after the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade. The prestigious award, regarded as “The Heisman of Women’s Basketball,” is presented annually to the NCAA® Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA.
A product of Kansas City, Mo., White blossomed into one of A&M’s top players as a junior and was named a State Farm All-America Honorable Mention along with being selected to the Women’s Final Four All-Tournament Team. The six-foot guard is the team’s top returning scorer (13.8 ppg) who contributed 5.1 rebounds per game and helped the Aggies to their first national championship in program history. White shot a team-best 39 percent from beyond the arc and 49 percent from the floor last season. She was also an All-Big 12 First Team member and earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team. She boasts 1,063 career points and was a Co-Honoree for Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year at the KC PROPS Award Ceremony hosted by the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation earlier this summer.
The Big 12 Conference has four players on the list including White, Brittany Griner (Baylor), Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Carolyn Davis (Kansas).
The 2012 State Farm Wade Trophy winner will be announced during the WBCA National Convention, which will be held in conjunction with the 2012 NCAA® Women’s Final Four® in Denver.
