Aggies Force Game Three With 2-1 Win Over TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – With runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, Blake Allemand punched a 1-1 offering from TCU All-America closer Riley Ferrell down the leftfield line to drive in Nick Choruby with a sacrifice fly, giving the Texas A&M Aggies a 2-1 win over the Horned Frogs in NCAA Super Regional action Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.

With the win, the Aggies fought off the end of their season for the fourth time in the last eight days, including the second time in extra innings.

Texas A&M and TCU face off one last time Monday at 7 pm. The winner heads to next week’s College World Series.

The Aggies (50-13) joined LSU as the only two teams to reach the 50-win thus far in 2015. It marks the fifth 50-win season in school annals and the first since 1999.

Choruby sparked the game-winning rally for the Aggies in the 10th inning. With TCU starting pitcher Preston Morrison still under 100 pitches, Logan Nottebrok struck out swinging to start the inning, but Choruby drew a five-pitch walk. Michael Barash followed by driving a 1-0 pitch into leftfield and the mercurial Choruby raced around to third to put runners on the corners with one out. The Horned Frogs responded by calling on the flame-throwing Ferrell. His first pitch was low and the second offering was down Broadway to even the count. Allemand drove the next pitch deep enough to score Choruby on the sac fly and the end game.

Despite not earning the victory, Matt Kent weaved his fourth consecutive postseason gem to keep Texas A&M in the contest early. The junior southpaw scattered six hits and two walks while striking out six over 7.2 innings of work. He kept the vaunted TCU running game at bay as the Horned Frogs had two base runners caught stealing and hit into a double play.

In his four starts in the SEC Tournament and NCAA Championship, Kent has yielded just two runs on 21 hits and six walks while striking out 26 in 30.2 innings of work. His ERA in three NCAA Championship starts is 0.42 with one earned run in 21.2 innings of work.

The Aggies broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the sixth inning. Blake Allemand started the frame by smoking a ball passed the TCU shortstop into the right-center gap for a leadoff single. Ryne Birk pushed him to third with a sacrifice bunt. With the Horned Frogs’ defense drawn in, Mitchell Nau grounded to the left of TCU shortstop Keaton Jones who threw home to catch Allemand in a rundown. Nau scurried to second base before Allemand was tagged for the second out of the inning. Logan Taylor sliced a 2-2 offering inside the leftfield line to plate Nau with a double, staking A&M to a 1-0 lead.

TCU (48-13) was able to send the game to extra-innings with a surge in the top of the ninth. Facing Ryan Hendrix, who recorded the last out in the eighth, Connor Wanhanen and Evan Skoug strung together back-to-back singles to start the frame. Pinch-hitter Evan Williams pushed both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Nolan Brown was intentionally walked to load the bases. Keaton Jones slapped the first pitch he saw into centerfield and it went deep enough to push Wanhanen home for the equalizer on the sacrifice fly.

Hendrix (6-3) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out one in 2.1 innings.

Morrison (11-3) was the hard-luck loser for the Horned Frogs. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five in 9.1 innings.
