Aggies Finish Sixth at Sea Best Invitational

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The Texas A&M men’s golf team concluded its first tournament of the spring semester Tuesday, finishing in sixth place at the Sea Best Invitational on TPS at Sawgrass’ Dye’s Valley Course.

“It’s certainly Groundhog Day; different tournament, same results,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higginssaid. “Feels like we’ve seen this result before where we’re contending and doing ok before we play a horrendous back nine down the stretch and let it slip away. I think everybody is pretty frustrated and disappointed because we were playing well, even par through 12 holes, and we end up 12-over. That’s unacceptable golf and we’re going to have to rectify that situation.”

Texas A&M (282-293-292=867, +27) turned in a final round of 12-over par on Tuesday, while Florida (265-278-283=826, -14) captured the team title by 23 strokes over second place Liberty (281-288-280=849, +9).

In the player standings, freshman Chandler Phillips (68-75-68=211, +1) surged up the leaderboard with the day’s lowest round. The Huntsville, Texas, native carded a final round two-under par 68 which featured three birdies in his final six holes to climb 11 spots to seventh place.

“Individually, I could not be more proud of Chandler,” Higgins added. “Without him it would have been a disastrous finish. He had the low round of the day and to finish in the top 10 at this tournament is really good. He was great coming down the stretch, three under on his last six holes. I really admired his grit and determination today.”

Senior Andrew Lister (69-71-76=216, +6) ended play with a share of 18th place in the final standings while sophomore Cameron Champ (72-76-73=221, +11) tied for 40th place.

Meanwhile, seniors Ben Crancer (75-72-75=222, +12) and Adria Arnaus (73-75-77=225, +15) rounded out the A&M lineup in 46th and 61st place, respectively.

Playing as an individual sophomore Andrew Paysse (74-69-70=213, +3) shared 12th place on the leaderboard.

The next competition for Texas A&M will come Feb. 17-19 when the Aggies travel to Kauai, Hawaii, for the 2016 John A. Burns Invitational.
