Texas A&M System Board Of Regents Wants More Money Put Into Student Mental Health Services

The Texas A&M system board of regents wants more money put into student mental health services. Three regents made statements to that affect during a meeting of their committee on academics and student affairs (CASA) Thursday (May 21) in Kingsville. Three of the system universities vice president of student affairs made presentations to the regents. One of the three was Texas A&M’s Bill Kibler. Among his remarks, was announcing the ninth Aggie student this academic year to die from suicide. That compared with five the previous year and three from two years ago. Not including the Galveston and Qatar campuses, 78,741 students are served by a counseling staff of 47. Kibler says 12 more providers need to be hired to meet a nationally considered minimum ratio of one provider for each 1,500 students. Kibler said during the 2025 fiscal year, more than 17 percent of student medical visits resulted in a mental health diagnosis. A&M provides an app called TELUS, which according to the A&M website connects students with free, confidential professional counseling available 24/7 via app, telephone and web. Kibler says during the 2025 fiscal year there were 39,468 unique digital users of the TELUS app and 25,926 repeat users. All new students are required by state law to complete mental health and suicide awareness training during their first semester. Kibler said 24,583 students were trained this year. A&M faculty and staff also undergo mental health awareness and suicide prevention training. 454 were trained this year. Kibler said A&M needs a new student health center to replace the one that has been in operation since 1972, when enrollment was 16,000. And he said there are no facilities for health care/mental services on west campus, which serves over 20,000 students each day. Grimes County Commission Schedules Another Special Meeting About The Proposed SpaceX Complex

Wednesday’s (May 20) regular meeting of the Grimes County commission included another executive session that continued discussing economic incentives for the proposed SpaceX complex at Gibbons Creek lake. After returning to open session, county judge Joe Fauth said they directed their outside lawyer to resume talking with SpaceX. Then Fauth said announced they will hold a special meeting next Wednesday (May 27). Click HERE to read and download the agenda for the May 27, 2026 Grimes County commission special meeting. The ongoing Space X negotiations is one of three agenda items and one of two involving possible incentives. Next Wednesday’s agenda also includes possible incentives for a prospect either locating, staying or expanding at the Navasota industrial park. The prospect is identified only as a manufacturer of “heat-transfer equipment and thermal-management systems for cooling, refrigeration, and industrial processing applications.” The third agenda item is addressing undisclosed personnel matters. Bryan Police Arrests For An Aggravated Assault Inside A Convenience Store And A DWI With Two Prior Convictions

A Bryan woman remains in jail (as of May 21) after her arrest the week before (May 14) on a charge of cutting a woman inside a convenience store. The Bryan police arrest report says the victim refused medical treatment for what was described as superficial cuts on two fingers. Six BPD officers were involved in the investigation. Two were at the convenience store and four went to a home where they found the suspect and a box cutter that was in a grill. That led to 47 year old Nicole Roston going to jail for the 18th time in 30 years on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $50,000 dollars. The 25th time a 33 year old Bryan man has been in the Brazos County jail in 15 years, is for DWI with two prior convictions. The Bryan police arrest report says Jorge Luis Contreras Jr. was one of the drivers in a two vehicle crash last Friday (May 15). The other driver did not require immediate medical assistance after being trapped when the collision sent their vehicle into a ditch. Breath alcohol samples done by Contreras both measured above the legal limit at .120 and .109. As of May 21, Contreras remains jailed in lieu of a $30,000 dollar bond.
