Aggie women win thriller at OU, 80-78

The game of women’s basketball got a shot in the arm last night at the Nobles Center in Norman. Too bad the TV coverage was very limited but a packed arena watched a nail biter between 5th ranked Texas A&M and 13th ranked Oklahoma. Alas the home folks drove home sad as A&M won it 80-78 but they knew that they’d gotten their money’s worth.

It was A&M’s 12th straight win and their second straight road win over a ranked opponent, but it didn’t come easy… although for a while in the first half, it looked like it might.

The Aggies trailed by three when they erupted on a 19-1 run to take a 15-point lead that grew to 17 points later. Aggies Danielle Adams had scored 22 points in the first 14 minutes of the game.

A&M led by 13 at half and as you knew they would, the Sooner came roaring back, opening the second half with a 9-0 run to cut the Aggies lead to 4… game on!

A&M would get the lead back to 11 a couple of times but OU outscored A&M 24-11 in a 7-minute span and took ther lead by 2 with 5:31 left.

Take it to the last minute after A&M’s Cydni Carter tied it at 78-all. OU’s super star Danielle Robinson then missed two underneath and a free throw within 25 seconds. A&M came down where Adams was fouled with 7 second left. She made both free throws and then guarded Robinson down the court where she missed a contested 12-footer at the buzzer that would have tied it.

Both Danielles (Adams and Robinson) scored over 30 points. A&M has a half-game lead over Baylor in the Big 12 standings now but that will be settled Sunday at Noon when the top ranked Bears come to Reed Arena for the Nation’s spotlight game.
