IRVING, Texas – For the seventh consecutive season, the Texas A&M women’s basketball team captured one of the top four seeds and a first-round bye going into the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Women’s Basketball Championship held Wednesday-Saturday, March 7-10 in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium.
Baylor claimed the Big 12 regular season title to earn the No. 1 seed. The Aggies tied for second place in the regular season standings with Oklahoma. A draw was conducted to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds as both the Aggies and the Sooners had identical records in the four steps of the Championship tiebreaking procedure. Oklahoma received the No. 2 seed and Texas A&M is the No. 3 seed.
Other seeds include No. 4 Iowa State, No. 5 Kansas State, No. 6 Kansas, No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Texas, No. 9 Texas Tech and No. 10 Missouri.
A&M will face No. 6 seed Kansas in Big 12 quarterfinal action on Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
A new championship format will be featured in 2012. Two first round games will be played on March 7, followed by quarterfinals on March 8, semifinals on March 9 and the final on March 10.
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship returns to Municipal Auditorium for the 11th time in Conference history. Kansas City hosted the first six women’s postseason events from 1997-2002, in addition to the 2005, 2008-09 and 2011 championships.
