Aggie women ranked 8th in AP pre-season poll

The Texas A&M women’s basketball team earned its highest-ever preseason ranking with a spot at No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll that was released Friday.

Coming off of their third Big 12 Championship last season, the Aggies make their fifth consecutive appearance in the AP preseason poll. The Aggies were the second-highest ranked school from the Big 12, which had with the most teams of any conference in the top 10.

Connecticut, the two-time defending national champion who has won a record 78 straight games, was the overwhelming choice as the No. 1 team in the land. The Huskies received 39 of the 40 first-place votes from a national media panel and have been No. 1 for 44 straight weeks. Baylor received the other first-place vote and was second, with Stanford, Tennessee and Xavier rounding out the first five. Duke and Ohio State were ranked sixth and seventh, while Kentucky and Oklahoma were ninth and 10th.

Other A&M opponents in the top 25 include No. 6 Duke, No. 17 Texas, No. 20 Iowa State and No. 23 TCU.

With the 2010-11 season just around the corner, the Aggies have enjoyed preseason billing by numerous media outlets including a No. 7 ranking by Athlon Sports, No. 10 ranking by Lindy’s Sports and No. 15 ranking by Sporting News.

Texas A&M returns three starters from a 2009-10 squad that finished the season with a 26-8 overall record and earned its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Aggies hold their Maroon and White scrimmage on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. before hosting the Houston Jaguars in an exhibition game scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13. A&M commences the 2010-11 season with its home opener versus UALR on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
