The Texas A&M track & field team closed out the Battle on the Bayou with a pair of marks which landed in the Aggies’ all-time performers list Saturday at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
Jaiya Covington set the tone for the day, standing out in the women’s 100m hurdles. The senior clocked an impressive time of 12.79 which was good for second in the event and first among collegiate competitors. Her mark also ranks second nationally in the event this season. On the men’s side Ja’Qualon Scott followed suit, taking second in 13.36 which is also good for No. 3 nationally this year.
Reece Sharman-Newell added his name to the list of great in the men’s 800m Aggie record books, as he finished second in 1:46.57 which ranks him at No. 9 in the all-time list and No. 3 in the NCAA this year. The Maroon & White also collected another three top-six finishes in the event courtesy of Grant Ashby in fourth with a personal-best mark of 1:47.51, Ondrej Gajdos in fifth also with a career-best time (1:47.64) and Stefon Dodoo rounded out the group in sixth (1:47.75).
Lawson Jacobs opened his outdoor 400m campaign with a personal-best showing. The sophomore ran 45.12 to take second at the meet, his time lands him at No. 12 in Aggie history and is No. 2 nationally this year. For the women it was Lacarthea Cooper who paced the group, as she clocked a career-best mark of 51.86 which ranked her sixth in the event.
In the short sprints, David Foster made his debut for the Maroon & White in the 100m and impressed after clocking 10.16 which placed him sixth on the day, while the time ranks ninth nationally.
A&M’s relay groups stepped up to the plate and delivered. The women’s 4x100m team of Anya Jackson, Camryn Dickson, Aysha Shaheed and Jasmine Montgomery finished in 43.09 which was good for third in the event and second against collegiate groups. The team’s mark was also good for No. 3 nationally. Both the men’s and women’s 4x400m groups took second place to conclude the meet. For the women, Cooper, Dickson, Montgomery and Jahnile Registre finished in 3:28.36, while Eric Hemphill III, Jacobs, Scott and Kimar Farquharson clocked 3:01.62.
In the field, Abigail Martin took third in the women’s discus with a mark of 58.88m/193-2 which ranks her fifth in the nation this year. Carlie Weiser took second in the women’s shot put (15.49m/50-10). In the high jump Milena Chevallier secured second with a leap of 1.76m/5-9.25, while Etoro Bassey cleared 2.11m/6-11 to finish fourth in the men’s event.
