Aggie Tennis Finish as National Runner Up

News Release from Texas A&M Athletics

WACO – The No. 2 Texas A&M women’s tennis team finished the season as national runner-up after coming out on the wrong end of 4-0 decision against No. 1 Georgia in Sunday’s NCAA Championship final at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center.

Despite the loss, the Aggies added on to the most successful era in program history. Among Texas A&M’s feats are making it to the championship match in back-to-back years for the first time. The Maroon & White are also the only squad in the nation to make it to each of the last four NCAA Quarterfinals and the last six Sweet Sixteens.

Texas A&M finished the season with a 30-4 mark and won a share of its fourth consecutive SEC regular-season title with a 14-1 league ledger.

Georgia won the pivotal doubles point with victories on court 2 and 3. No. 68 Guillermina Grant/Anastasiia Lopata bested Texas A&M’s Lexington Reed/Daria Smetannikov, 6-2, on the middle court and Aysegui Mert/Hayden Mulberry topped Nicole Khirin/Lucciana Perez at the bottom of the lineup, 7-5.

The teams split the first sets of singles, but the Bulldogs won four of the five completed second sets to swing momentum back their way.

On the marquee court, No. 2 Dasha Vidmanova was victorious over No. 1 Mary Stoiana, 6-4, 6-4, to give Georgia a 2-0 advantage.

Court 2 checked in next with No. 17 Lopata registering a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over No. 13 Khirin, putting Georgia one point away from the championship.

The Bulldogs clinched the match on court 6 with Sofia Rojas recording a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Reed.

Mia Kupres earned All-Tournament Team recognition for her performance of going 5-0 in NCAA Championship action. She was leading Georgia’s Mell Reasco on court 3 when the match was halted, 6-3, 1-6, 5-4.
