Sophomore Ashley Walters went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a career-high six runs Sunday as the 11th-ranked Texas A&M softball team completed the sweep against Arkansas with a 9-1 victory at the Aggie Softball Complex.
“I am really proud of how our team came back this weekend after a disappointing performance at Georgia,” head coach Jo Evans said. “We came out ready to play. There wasn’t a time where our team didn’t feel confident about what we were doing. In particular,Samantha Show had a great outing today and Trinity Harringtonwas terrific yesterday. It was nice to see our pitchers step up. Offensively, we put a lot of runs on the board, and we took advantage of opportunities. It is nice to see us running on all cylinders.”
A&M quickly took the lead in the first as senior Cali Lanphear drew a bases loaded walk to open the scoring, before Walters gave the Aggies (30-6, 5-4 SEC) a 4-0 lead with a bases clearing double to right center.
A&M tacked on three runs in the third as Walters belted her fourth dinger of the season, scoring Lanphear, who got on via a bunt. Sophomore Kristen Cuyos and freshman Samantha Show followed with back-to-back singles, before freshman Riley Sartain was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Keeli Milligan walked on five pitches, allowing Cuyos to score.
In the fifth, Lanphear roped a one-out double to right center off the top of the wall and scored on a Walters single to right. Sophomore Erica Russell pinch ran for Walters and was driven in on a Cuyos sacrifice fly to right.
Ashley Diaz scored the lone run for the Razorbacks (13-23, 0-9 SEC) on a leadoff homer to left center in the second.
Show earned her 18th victory in the circle, throwing a complete game three-hitter with nine strikeouts. Show is now 18-5 on the campaign with a 3.26 ERA.
